Get This Toronto Sleep Apnea Assessment and Treatment

Sleep Apnea treatments have been successfully provided by Dr. Richard Goodfellow since 1999. The three main types of professional treatment available to those people looking to stop their sleep apena are continuous positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP), a special oral mouthguard selected and custom fitted by a specially trained dentist, and surgery. Sometimes a combination of these approaches are tried.

What is important for patients seeking this type of treatment to know is the exact cause and extent of their problem. This makes a proper assessment, performed by a properly trained dentist, perhaps the most important part of getting better as quickly, safely and inexpensively as possible with the least amount of disruption to your life.

Dr. Goodfellow has been a dentist since 1978 but since 1999 he has invested thousands of hours in the study and treatment of sleep apnea. Based on his experience he can quickly tell from his initial assessment what the root cause of a patients problem is, the extent of the problem, and provide treatment recommendations.

Make Sure You Get THESE Tests Done In YOUR Assessment

Look for a dentist who performs the following tests in his assessment to determine what the cause and extent of your sleep apnea is and what an appropriate treatment would be for you:

1. Before making any recommendations he gets a dental and medical history of you

2. A thorough intra-oral exam is done

3. Your peridontal health is assessed

4. X-rays are taken

5. An assessment of both your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and your bite, referred to as your occlusion, is done

6. Your gag reflex is assessed

7. Your tonsils are evaluated

8. An orthotic exam is performed

9. Your airway is assessed with ecovision

10. Preferably he is a dentist with considerable experience and training that involve problems stemming from the jaw area. Specifically this includes TMJ syndrome, snoring problems and sleep apnea.

All the elements described above that are part of the very important Sleep Apnea Assessment are provided by Dr. Goodfellow. Equally important is the thousands of hours of training and first hand experience he has acquired in this area on more than 650 patients since 1999.

Pros And Cons Of The 3 Main Treatments

Each of the 3 main treatments people consider as a solution to sleep apnea has advantages and disadvantages. Here is an overview of each treatment:

Surgery

There are many disadvantages of surgery. It is invasivie. It is irreversible. There is no going back once you have had surgery. And, any surgery has some risk associated with it - both from the surgery itself as well as from possible side effects from any drugs taken along with surgery.

The advantage is that this is another option to consider if the other two main options below do not work for you. But try the other two options first.

A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Device (CPAP)

With this method your airway is opened through the use of a device that forces air into your nose.

One disadvantage is the inconvenience. The device is placed beside the bed with a tube running from it to a mask which is placed over your nose. While this procedure certainly works, it is quite cumbersome and an annoyance for many.

The other disadvantage is the cost. It can be quite expensive.

However, the advantage is that it works very well, especially for severe cases of obstructive sleep apnea.

Oral Appliance (Mouthguard From a Dentist)

This is a mouth guard that you wear at night that is similar to a sports mouth guard. It is designed to gently move the lower jaw forward while it is being worn so that more air arrives into the throat.

The disadvantage is that the CPAP device described above is really what is required for very severe cases.

The other disadvantage is that you need to find and visit a dentist who has special training in the assessment of your condition as well as dealing with the selection, fitting and customization of this appliance. Not all cities have many, or any, of these specially trained dentists.

Tthere are many, many advantages to this approach though.

First, since you interact with a specially trained dentist you know you are getting a trusted and highly trained professional working with you to find the best solution for your needs.

This type of mouth guard provided by a specially trained dentist works well for most cases of sleep apnea.

Relatively speaking, it is inexpensive compared to other options.

Most people like that is it the least invasive option.

It is the simplest approach - all you do is pop in the mouth piece before bed.

This approach is easily reversible - if you don't like it, you simply stop wearing it.

Best of all... it works very, very well for most people.

In fact, with some models (depending on the specially trained dentist you choose)...

The Success Rate Is Extremely High!

Very interesting article about sleep apnea treatment. As a truck driver I also suffer from sleep apnea and it affects my job performance greatly. I saw a presentation put on by Aeroflow Industrial Clinics ( http://www.aeroflowindustrialclinics.com/ ) that I found very informative especially for truck drivers like me.

Thanks for the great article!

The problem with dental appliances is they stretch your jaw muscles and affect your dental bite. TRhey work, but over time they affect your teeth and supporting jaw muscles.
